G GRAIN ROT Field Notes

GRAIN ROT beginner guide — first run prep before the August 7 launch

GRAIN ROT launches on Steam on August 7, 2026. Until then, the reliable preparation is understanding the officially confirmed loop — possess a wooden vessel, ride the elevator down, extract loot, rebuild your Outpost — not memorising unverified builds. This page tracks sourced facts only.

GRAIN ROT is not out yet. This guide covers only what the developer and the Steam store page have published, so you can walk into launch day knowing the real loop — and so you can ignore any “best build” content that cannot possibly be verified before release.

Is GRAIN ROT out yet?

No. GRAIN ROT launches on Steam on August 7, 2026, confirmed in the official July 14 announcement and on the store page. It is made by Beck & Branch Games, a two-person Swedish studio, and published by Neem.

What the store page confirms right now:

  • Platform: PC via Steam. No console versions have been announced.
  • Modes: single-player and online co-op are both listed; the launch press release describes co-op for up to four players.
  • Genre: a first-person horror co-op extraction builder — Steam tags include Survival Horror, Action Roguelike, Base Building, Procedural Generation and Physics.
  • Price: not listed yet as of July 26, 2026.
  • AI disclosure: the developers state generative AI is used for the voice-over of a few in-game characters.

The confirmed core loop

Everything below is taken from the official Steam description, not from speculation.

  1. You are a Living Spark possessing fragile, flammable wooden bodies called vessels. When a vessel shatters, your Spark escapes — the store page literally says “Death is just a change of scenery.”
  2. Your crew rides a cursed elevator down into shifting, procedurally generated underground ruins.
  3. Inside, you rip out furniture for resources or grind it into gold, then haul what you can back up. If the whole team breaks, the loot is lost.
  4. After your vessel breaks you persist as a Spark with its own abilities and can look for a new host body before fading.
  5. Extracted loot rebuilds your base between runs — furniture, stat upgrades and rescued survivors. That persistent layer is covered in our Outpost guide.

Two more confirmed wrinkles: friendly trolling is a designed mechanic (you can dropkick enemies — or knock an ally’s Spark out of its vessel), and descending deeper worsens the Rot, which warps bodies and distorts voices. The hostile side of the deep floors, the Corrupted, is covered in the monster guide.

What the demo period showed

The free demo launched on June 12, 2026 during Steam Next Fest and was available through June 22. The official announcements give a clear trajectory: 60,000 downloads by June 15, then over 350,000 demo downloads in total, making GRAIN ROT one of the top 15 most-played games of that Next Fest. By July 14 the developers said they were about to hit 200,000 wishlists.

The most useful signal for new players: the developers named difficulty — especially for solo players and smaller groups — as the biggest feedback topic from the demo, and the launch feature list explicitly includes difficulty balancing. If you plan to play alone, expect the launch build to have been tuned with you in mind, but treat any pre-launch difficulty claims as demo-era information.

How to prepare before August 7

  • Check your PC against the confirmed requirements. Windows 10 64-bit, DirectX 11, 8 GB RAM and 10 GB storage; minimum GPU is a GTX 970 / R9 390, recommended an RTX 2060 / RX 5700.
  • Decide solo or crew. Both are supported. Co-op is clearly the design centre — team wipes losing loot only matters when there is a team.
  • Learn the meta layer first. The Outpost guide covers what officially carries over between runs, which is the part you can actually plan around before launch.
  • Ignore tier lists. No vessel stats, weapon numbers or upgrade costs have been officially published. Anything ranked “best” before August 7 is guesswork.

What we deliberately do not list yet

No damage numbers, drop tables, monster weaknesses, “best vessel” rankings or Outpost upgrade orders appear on any official page, so none appear here. Those sections will be added and marked with a fresh last-checked date once the game is out and the claims can be verified in-game.
