GRAIN ROT Outpost guide — how base progression works between runs

How GRAIN ROT's Outpost works according to official material — hauling loot back, furniture, stat upgrades, survivors, and what the 1.0 release added.

Quick Answer

The Outpost is GRAIN ROT's persistent base: extracted loot unlocks furniture, stat upgrades and rescued survivors. Exact costs, crafting recipes, room levels and shop-upgrade order are unverified.

The Outpost is the layer of GRAIN ROT you keep. Runs into the ruins are disposable — vessels splinter, Sparks fade, team wipes eat your loot — but what you successfully haul back feeds a persistent base. This page collects everything official material has actually said about it, and clearly marks what has not been said.

What the Outpost is, officially

The Steam store page describes the loop directly: hauled loot rebuilds the Outpost, unlocking furniture, stat upgrades and rescued survivors, which in turn enable deeper runs. Persistent Outpost progression is listed as a core feature of the game.

That is the complete official picture as of August 12, 2026: the Outpost is the meta-progression hub, it grows from extracted loot, and its growth is what gates how deep you can push. Nothing official yet describes individual rooms, their levels or their costs.

The loop that feeds it

The supply side of the Outpost comes straight from the confirmed core loop (see the beginner guide for the full version):

  1. Ride the cursed elevator down into shifting, procedurally generated ruins.
  2. Rip out furniture — the press release confirms it can be destroyed for resources or converted into gold via a machine called the Grinder.
  3. Extract with whatever your crew can carry. If the whole team breaks, that run’s loot is lost.

This makes the Outpost the reason risk decisions matter. Going one floor deeper means better salvage but a worse case of the Rot and more dangerous Corrupted vessels — covered in the monster guide — and a wipe costs you the entire haul, not just your body.

Survivors and Outpost NPCs

Two related but distinct confirmed points:

  • Survivor rescue is listed on the Steam page as a feature, and rescued survivors are named alongside furniture and stat upgrades as things your loot unlocks for the Outpost.
  • The official July 14 launch announcement says the 1.0 release adds new Outpost NPCs on top of what the demo had.

What survivors and NPCs actually do — vendors, crafting, quests, buffs — has not been officially detailed. The current official material confirms the Outpost and upgrade systems, but does not confirm a named “shop upgrade” route, exact recipe list, costs or order. Treat any specific claim about survivor roles, crafting recipes or shop levels as not yet verified.

What the 1.0 launch adds to the Outpost

The developer’s launch announcement lists the full-release additions. These are confirmed as planned features, but none of them have published details yet:

1.0 additionWhat official material saysDetail level
Second Outpost floorA new floor is being added to the baseNo layout or unlock info
Enchantment & repair machineNew machine arrives with 1.0No costs or mechanics
Player levelingLeveling system added for launchNo level effects published
More constructsMore buildable constructs than the demoNo list or stats
New Outpost NPCsNew NPCs join the baseRoles not described
Complete 1.0 quest flowFull quest flow ships at launchNo quest details

The same announcement also mentions elevator extraction with treasures, items and vessels, plus new elevator modifiers — systems that feed the Outpost but are equally undetailed for now.

What is not yet verified

Search results and videos already float claims about room levels, furniture stats and upgrade orders based on the demo period. We could not verify any of them against an official page, and demo balance is explicitly being changed for launch — the developers named difficulty balancing as part of the 1.0 work. The game released on August 7, 2026; treat every specific number as unverified until this page is rebuilt from in-game testing, with a fresh last-checked date.

Extraction-to-Outpost verification ledger

The launch announcement names treasures, items and vessels as things that can leave the elevator with the crew. Those categories should not be collapsed into one generic “loot” row:

Extracted categoryOfficially confirmedStill unknown
TreasuresCan be extracted in the elevatorSale value, rarity and upgrade use
ItemsCan be extracted; many new items ship in 1.0Names, slots, durability and recipes
VesselsCan be extracted from the ruinsStorage rules and whether abilities persist
FurnitureFuels resources or Grinder goldExact conversion rates and build requirements

This ledger is the safe starting point for a launch-day database. We will record each category separately and only promote a field from unknown after an in-game test or a new official source. See the items database for the same boundary at item level and the mission and event list for the announced quest-flow boundary.

Survivors and new Outpost NPCs are also tracked separately. The store confirms survivor rescue; the launch post confirms new NPCs. It does not say every rescued survivor is a vendor, quest giver or permanent upgrade, so those roles remain blank rather than being guessed.

Frequently asked questions

Do I lose my Outpost progress when the team wipes?
Officially, a full-team wipe loses the loot you were carrying on that run. The Outpost itself is described as persistent progression, and no official material says base upgrades are lost. The exact split still needs in-game verification.
What is the Grinder?
Per the launch press release, furniture you find in the ruins can be destroyed for resources or converted into gold via the Grinder. Rates and values have not been published.
What is the best Outpost upgrade order?
Unknown. No official source lists upgrade costs or effects, so any upgrade-order guide is invented. We will test and publish one once the claims can be verified in-game.
